Yuen Long Station (元朗站) is located in Sun Yuen Long Centre on Long Yat Road, Northern Yuen Long District, New Territories. It is an elevated station and connected to the Light Rail Yuen Long Stop.

Opened on 20 December 2003, Yuen Long Station is situated at the eastern edge of Yuen Long Town, which serves YOHO Mall and various villages in Yuen Long Old Town and connects to Yuen Long Main Road via Light Rail.

Station structure

Yuen Long Station is 420 metres long and 40 metres wide, with elevated concourses and platforms, 3 lifts and 12 escalators running between the platforms and concourses, as well as between the concourses and exits. There is a public transport interchange (PTI) at ground level with bus terminus, minibus stops and other transport services, and the Yuen Long Old Town to the north.

To the south of the station is Light Rail Yuen Long Stop and the superstructure of Sun Yuen Long Centre, which is immediately connected to the Yuen Long (East) Bus Terminus, and along the footbridge to the south, it is a short walk to the YOHO Town.

Yuen Long Station has two platforms arranged in an island platform arrangement with platform screen doors installed during the construction of the station. Each platform can accommodate a 9-car train, and currently only the first 8-car train is used so that the driver's cab is aligned with the staff area to facilitate the conduct of various train operations in the staff area as far as practicable and to facilitate the train captain to carry on the tradition of the West Rail (i.e. the train captain will step out of the driver's cab to ensure that the doors of the train have been properly closed after pressing the door closure button before he returns to the driver's cab to continue driving).

Yuen Long Station is an intermediate station on Tuen Ma Line. Passengers can take either Tuen Mun-bound or Wu Kai Sha-bound trains to and from Tuen Mun, Yuen Long, Tsuen Wan, West Kowloon, Central Kowloon, Shing Mun River East and Ma On Shan New Town.

Fare remarks

Adult (12-64 years old, including students and persons with disabilities) fares for QR Code tickets are the same as Adult Octopus; QR Code Concessionary fares (Child and Elderly) are the same as Child/Elderly Octopus cards. Fares for inductive cards (credit or debit cards, and their bundled smartphones or watches) ("Credit Cards") are the same as those of an Adult Octopus, and there are no concessionary fares. "China T-union" fares are the same as those of an Adult Octopus and are settled in Hong Kong Dollars at the exchange rate of Renminbi/RMB (The exchange rate is announced by Octopus Cards Limited and is for reference only. The exchange rate stored in the reader/writer at the time of transaction will be used as the basis for settlement, please refer to the Octopus website for details). Only the HKD fare deducted for that journey will be displayed on the gate screen when exiting the gate and there are no fare concessions. Passengers are required to add value to their "China T-union" before arrival and ensure that they have a minimum of RMB50 stored value before travelling on the MTR, otherwise they will not be allowed to enter the gate. The maximum stored value cannot exceed RMB1,000. First Class Premium: Passengers travelling First Class on the East Rail Line are required to pay, in addition to the fares listed above, an additional First Class Fare which is equivalent to the fare of the East Rail Line journey (Eligible students using a Student Status Personalised Octopus and Hong Kong residents aged 60-64 using a JoyYou Card are required to pay Adults' First Class Fare, whereas Hong Kong residents aged 65 or above using a JoyYou Card Card and eligible persons with disabilities using a Personalised Octopus (including JoyYou Card Card) are required to pay Child/Elderly Concessionary First Class Fare). If the Octopus, QR Code or credit card used by a passenger has a record of First Class registration but the station shown on the Octopus, QR Code or credit card as the station of entry and exit is not a station on the East Rail Line, the additional First Class Premium payable by the passenger will be equivalent to the lowest Octopus, QR Code or credit card fare of the journey on the East Rail Line (for cross-harbour journeys, the First Class Premium will be based on the fare at Admiralty/Exhibition Centre stations). First Class Compartments are not covered by "China T-union" cards. Child/Elderly Concessionary Fares are only applicable to children aged 3-11 and elderly aged 65 or above. All eligible students using a Personalised Octopus with Student Status can enjoy concessionary fares on all MTR domestic services (including Light Rail and MTR Bus (Northwest New Territories)), except Airport Express, MTR Feeder Buses, journeys to/from Lo Wu or Lok Ma Chau stations, and additional fares on East Rail Line First Class Compartment. Eligible students using Single Journey Tickets or QR Codes to travel on MTR are required to pay adult fares. Under the Government's Public Transport Fare Concession Scheme for the Elderly and Eligible Persons with Disabilities, Hong Kong residents aged 60 or above using the JoyYou Card and eligible persons with disabilities using a Personalised Octopus Card for Persons with Disabilities (including the JoyYou Card) may use MTR local services (including Light Rail, MTR Bus (Northwest New Territories) and MTR Feeder Bus) pay only $2 or the concessionary fare per journey (whichever is lower; however, the fare for using the Personalised Octopus Card with Disabilities Status for MTR Feeder Bus and for those aged 60-64 using the JoyYou Card is uniformly $2), excluding journeys on the Airport Express, to/from Lo Wu Station or Lok Ma Chau Station, and theEast Rail Line First Class Premium. This concession also does not apply to journeys to/from Racecourse Station by persons aged 60-64 using the JoyYou Card (except those stated with "Persons with Disabilities" status). Hong Kong residents aged 65 or above, and eligible persons with disabilities aged 3-11 using single journey tickets or QR codes to travel on the MTR shall pay the concessionary fare. Hong Kong residents aged 60-64, and eligible persons with disabilities aged 12-64 using single journey tickets or QR codes to travel on the MTR shall pay the adult fare. Hong Kong residents aged 60 to 64 using the JoyYou Card (excluding those with a disability status endorsement) shall pay the adult Octopus fare or additional charge for journeys on the Airport Express, between Lo Wu Station, Lok Ma Chau Station and Racecourse Station, and on the East Rail Line First Class Compartment. Hong Kong residents aged 65 or above using the JoyYou Card and eligible persons with disabilities using the Personalised Octopus Card for Persons with Disabilities (including the JoyYou Card) to travel on the Airport Express will be charged the adult Octopus fare; additionally, the journey between Lo Wu Station and Lok Ma Chau Station and the East Rail Line First Class Premium will apply. The related journey will be charged at the child Octopus fare or additional fare. Tsim Sha Tsui Station and East Tsim Sha Tsui Station are two independent stations with independent entry and exit gates. Passengers holding an Octopus card who interchange between these two stations within 30 minutes will be deemed to have completed a single journey. Upon exiting the gate, passengers must first pay the fare for the initial journey before continuing their journey using the same Octopus card; the remaining fare will be deducted upon exiting the gate at their destination. Should the total fare be less than the pre-interchange fare, the excess amount will be refunded upon exit at the destination. However, any journey involving entry and exit at both stations shall be treated as a separate journey and not part of the interchange journey, and shall be charged independently. Passengers should note that during the period between exiting and re-entering the fare collection area, the Octopus card must not be used to travel on other modes of transport (including Light Rail, MTR Bus (Northwest New Territories) and MTR Feeder Bus), nor should it be used for more than nine non-transport transactions. Failure to comply will result in the journey being treated as two separate journeys, each charged individually. Additionally, when using a Disneyland Resort Line monthly pass, regardless of the interchange time limit, the journey will be treated as an independent journey and not as part of a interchange journey. Passengers holding a QR code, credit card or China T-union card who wish to interchange at Tsim Sha Tsui Station or East Tsim Sha Tsui Station will be treated as undertaking two separate journeys. They must first scan their QR code or tap their credit card/China T-union card when exiting at Tsim Sha Tsui Station or East Tsim Sha Tsui Station to pay the fare for the first journey, then scan the QR code or tap their credit card/China T-union card again at the other station (Tsim Sha Tsui Station or East Tsim Sha Tsui Station) to continue their second journey, and pay the fare when exiting at their destination. However, the combined fare for both journeys will be higher than transferring at other stations en route to the same destination. Passengers using single journey tickets who wish to change lines at Tsim Sha Tsui Station or East Tsim Sha Tsui Station will be deemed to have undertaken two journeys. Passengers must first purchase a ticket to that station. The ticket will be collected by the fare gate upon exit at that station. Passengers must then purchase another ticket to continue the remaining journey. However, the combined fare for both journeys will be higher than using a single journey ticket to the same destination. The above fares for single-journey tickets, QR codes, credit cards or China T-union cards are not valid for interchanges at Tsim Sha Tsui Station or East Tsim Sha Tsui Station. A minimum fare must be paid when entering or exiting the station (at Lo Wu Station or Lok Ma Chau Station, the minimum fare for that station applies). Except for senior citizens and eligible persons with disabilities using Octopus cards, if a passenger's Octopus card, QR code or credit card has a record of travelling in First Class, but both the entry and exit stations displayed on the Octopus card, QR code or credit card are within the same station and the journey exceeds 20 minutes, the passenger shall pay a First Class surcharge equivalent to the minimum Octopus fare for the East Rail Line journey (For Lo Wu Station or Lok Ma Chau Station, the minimum premium fare for that station must be paid) (Except as provided in Item 10). Passengers (excluding senior citizens and eligible persons with disabilities using Octopus cards, including the "JoyYou Card") who exit the station more than 20 minutes after entering (excluding Lo Wu Station or Lok Ma Chau Station) and exit at the same station shall pay a flat additional fare of $10 (including credit cards, the "China T-union" or persons aged 60-64 using the (excluding those with "Persons with Disabilities" noted) (Children and eligible students using Octopus cards, as well as seniors or eligible persons with disabilities aged 3-11 using single journey tickets or QR codes, will be charged $5. Eligible students and eligible persons with disabilities aged 12-64 using single journey tickets or QR codes will be charged $10.) The use of tickets is subject to the Mass-Transit Railway By-laws and the Conditions of Issue of Tickets. The surcharge for fare evasion is $1,000. Passengers may enjoy complimentary MTR interchange services by using the same Octopus card with available value to transfer to the Airport Express or any MTR journey within one hour at Hong Kong Station, Kowloon Station or Tsing Yi Station (interchanges viaTsim Sha Tsui Station or East Tsim Sha Tsui Station must be completed within 30 minutes). The complimentary MTR interchanges service includes Lo Wu Station and Lok Ma Chau Station, but does not apply to the Light Rail, MTR Bus, MTR Feeder Bus, or the East Rail Line First Class Premium. When using the In-Town Check-in service, the complimentary MTR interchange service is only applicable to the preceding MTR journey prior to travelling to the In-Town Check-In service. The complimentary MTR interchange service is not applicable to single journey tickets, QR codes or credit cards. Passengers who wish to enjoy free interchange with Light Rail and/or MTR Bus must use an Octopus with a positive Octopus balance and travel according to the following pattern: Between MTR and Light Rail: Passengers must interchange within 30 minutes after tapping their cards at MTR exit gates or Light Rail Stop Exit Processors. This interchange discount is applicable only to Octopus users and Light Rail journeys with an adult fare of $5.1 (fares for children, elderly and eligible students are $2.4) or lower. Between MTR and MTR Bus: From MTR to MTR Bus: Passengers must interchange to MTR Bus within 60 minutes of exiting gates. From MTR Bus to MTR: Passengers must interchange to MTR within 60 minutes of validation on Octopus processor onboard a bus. rom Light Rail/MTR Bus to MTR (Tuen Ma Line), then interchanging to Light Rail/MTR Bus: The whole journey must be completed within 2 hours. Free interchanges are not applicable to Single Journey Tickets, QR codes, credit cards or "China T-union". Passengers holding an Octopus-enabled "China T-union" will be able to use it in the same way as a normal Octopus, including enjoying the relevant fare concessions (where applicable) and travelling on the East Rail Line after First Class Confirmation.

Yuen Long Station is connected to the Light Rail Yuen Long Stop located at the ground floor of Sun Yuen Long Centre/YOHO Mall II, where most Tuen Ma Line passengers can interchange to Light Rail for free towards Yuen Long Main Road. Passengers may access the Light Rail stop via Exits G or E.

Besides, Yuen Long Station Public Transport Interchange is situated at the base level of the Yuen Long Station structure, with several green minibus routes connecting rural Yuen Long stopping there, so do the two franchised bus routes connecting to Lok Ma Chau Spur Line Control Point and Shenzhen Bay Control Point respectively, making this station a major interchange point to the Mainland from Northwest New Territories. There is also "YOHO Mall II" bus stop located on Long Yat Road for cross-district routes. Other bus stops, including Yuen Long East Bus Terminus and the YOHO Mall I bus stop on Castle Peak Road are located farther away from this station.

To Lok Ma Chau

Following the opening of the Kowloon Southern Link, MTR Corporation posted interchange guides along the West Rail Line stating that passengers may interchange to the East Rail Line at Hung Hom Station to travel to Lo Wu Station or Lok Ma Chau Station. However, geographically speaking, Lok Ma Chau Station is actually located north of Yuen Long Station, and for passengers travelling from areas such as Yuen Long, Tin Shui Wai to Lok Ma Chau, following the MTR's interchange instructions would require travelling south via Kowloon Peninsula and the eastern New Territories. Compared to the KMB Route B1 connecting the two stations and the New Territories GMB Route 75 operating between Yuen Long (Fook Hong Street) Minibus Terminus and Lok Ma Chau Station, The MTR journey thus appears circuitous, time-consuming and costly (KMB B1 fare: $13.2; MTR fare: $55.6), leading to criticism that the interchange guidance has misled passengers.

In case of train service disruption at this station, free shuttle bus services may be provided by MTR. The pick up and drop off point for shuttle buses at this station is located at Long Wo Road, which can be accessible via , or follow staff instructions to the boarding point.
