The Northern Link will be a rail link in the northern part of the New Territories, which connects the Tuen Ma Line and the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line of the East Rail Line, bridging a gap which is solely served by road transport. The route will be run using standard gauge (1435 mm) trains, in consistency with the KCR (suburban) lines.

The link will also serve as a connection to the Lok Ma Chau border checkpoint to Mainland China for passengers traveling to/from the western part of the New Territories. The Northern Link will start at Kam Sheung Road and end at Kwu Tung, where it will terminate at the East Rail Lok Ma Chau Spur Line station. Proposals recommend a new station to be built at Chau Tau for interchange between this link and East Rail Line. It is reported that the line may be built as a single-track railway to achieve cost effectiveness. Three intermediate stations, Au Tau, Ngau Tam Mei and San Tin are also proposed.

Under some of the proposals, the link will serve as one of the sections of the Regional Express, a new intercity service connecting Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Guangzhou.

The station box for Kwu Tung can be found along the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line as this was roughed in during the construction of the latter, although the station is yet to be built.
