The IKK-Train (近畿川崎列車) is a Japanese-made alternating current EMU (Electrical Multiple Unit). This commuter train is owned by the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation, which belongs to Power Distributed, manufactured by the Japanese Itochu Corporation (Itochu) [1], Kinki Sharyo and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. (referred to as "Kawasaki Heavy Industries", Kawasaki) the consortium "IKK Consortium"[2] manufactured this train at ITOCHU, an intermediary company. Thus, trains can either have Kinki Sharyo or Kawasaki manufacturer's plates although they look the same on the outside.
This EMU was delivered from 2001 to 2004, 2007 and 2015 to 2017 and is currently operates on the Tuen Ma Line. At the beginning of the train’s service, it ran on KCR's KCR East Rail, KCR West Rail, and Ma On Shan Rail; after the merger of the two railways, it was leased to MTR for operation and continued operating on West Rail Line, Ma On Shan Line, and East Rail Line during that time. As of 2021, these trains are exclusive to the Tuen Ma Line.
Name Reasons[]
Railway fans generally call this type of train "SP1900" and "SP1950", and the common names "1900" and "1950" are derived from this. "SP1900" and "SP1950", and were the supply contract numbers of the Kowloon-Canton Railway Company for this type of train at that time, where "SP" stands for Supply and Purchase respectively. In the early days when this type of train was put into service, KCRC called it the "Millennium Train" since it was their first major purchase of the 21st century.
Train Batches[]
SP1900[]
In 1997, KCRC was approved to purchase 8 additional sets of trains, and invited train manufacturers for pre-examination, which was expected to be completed in February 1998. [3]1999March 8, Japan "ITOCHU-Kinki-Kawasaki Foundation” won the contract of KCRC’s 250-car new electric train for HK$3.1 billion. Among them, 8 trains with 12 trains and a total of 96 trains are used to increase the frequency and passenger capacity of Template:East Rail, in line with the future development of East Rail, and also to take the opportunity to test the actual operating performance of new trains[4]; another 154 trains, a total of 22 7-car trains are used for West Rail which opened to traffic in 2003. [5]
The first new train for Template:East Rail arrived in March 22, 2001[6], KCRC then arranged for the new trains to undergo functional testing, and started July 25 in Sha Tin and Sheung Shui for a trial run [7]. On the day the "Century Train" was put into service on September 4 in 2001, the KCRC held an opening ceremony at Hung Hom Station and raised funds for children and elderly organizations on the maiden voyage of the new train. [8]
April 2 2002, 22 7-car trains belonging to West Rail Line also arrived in Hong Kong [9]. The batch of trains began field trials in April 2003 [10][11], all trains were officially put into service on December 20 with the opening of West Rail.
Starting February 6th 2021, the first batch of R-Trains will be put into service on East Rail Line, and the Kinki Sharyo/Kawasaki trains on this line It will be suspended from the same day. After the new signal system and new trains are in smooth operation, they will be transferred to Pat Heung Depot for reprogramming.
September 25, 2021, 3 of the last batch of SP1900 first-class train cars (F207, F227, F231) that served on East Rail Line were detached from their consists in Pat Heung Depot and were loaded onto trailers, ready to be transported back to the original factory in Japan and refitted as an standard class cars. The last two cars (F215, F219) were also shipped out of Pat Heung Depot in the early morning of November 19[12], Since then, all SP1900 coaches are standard class.
Car "D201"[]
There have been two cars with the same number "D201" in this order. The original D201 cab car was rejected by KCRC and handed over to the Japanese factory for production. However, due to a design error, the load test failed. In the end, it could only be used as a spares donor. It was parked in Pat Heung Depot until 2016, when the MTR transferred the car to the Hong Kong Fire Services Department and relocated it in the newly completed Fire and Ambulance Academy in Tseung Kwan O to provide training for new and current fire and ambulance personnel [13][14], where it was attached to a mockup train set. The car retains its East Rail Line route map decals on the inside, although the in-train TVs were removed. It remains as the only non-refurbished SP1900 carriage in existence.
After the failure of the original "D201" car test, Kinki Sharyo redesigned and manufactured another brand new "D201" car on July 2 2015. In order to cooperate with the Sha Tin to Central Link project, it became part of the first 8-car train on the West Rail Line, and the "D201" car number was changed to "D357" and was transferred to serve on the West Rail Line in January 2016.
SP1950[]
The KCRC awarded the "SP1950" contract in December 2000 to ITOCHU-Kinki Sharyo-Kawasaki Consortium added 72 cars and 4 cars to form a total of 18 sets of the same type, for the Ma On Shan Rail in which began service in 2004 . New trains were introduced under the "SP1950" contract arrived in Hong Kong since September 26 2003[15], put into service in December 21st, 2004 with the opening of Ma On Shan Rail.
KRS991[]
On March 7, 2006, in view of the additional demand brought about by the opening of the Kowloon Southern Link which would open in 2009, the KCRC paid HK$578 million to ITOCHU-Kinki Sharyo-Kawasaki Consortium and purchased 34 cars. [16] Among them, 28 cars will form 4 new trains with 7 cars; the other 6 cars would be used to expand two (D533/D534 and D535/D536) active trains that were running as Ma On Shan Line sets at that time. After expansion, the two trains were transferred to West Rail for service.
The new trains under this contract arrived in Hong Kong on July 14 2007[17] After many preparations, both sets were put into service from May to October 2008, after the merger of the two railways. The two trains that were ready for the expansion bid farewell to the KCR in September 20 2007, and were re-commissioned in August 18 and August 24 2008 respectively as MTR sets.

MTR in December 11 2013 awarded a tender for more trailer cars to ITOCHU-Kinki Sharyo-Kawasaki Consortium, with a total value of HK$1.18 billion. The scope of the contract covers the purchase of 36 new cars for expansion and the modification of 348 existing cars for Tuen Ma Line (ie Ma On Shan Line, Sha Tin to Central Link - Tai Wai to Hung Hom section and West Rail Line) before implementing 8-car service. [18][19][20]
The reconfiguration work was mainly carried out within the Pat Heung Depot; and the 8 SP1900s that used to run on the East Rail Line had their first class carriages removed. They were sent back to Japan and then returned to Hong Kong after being converted into ordinary class carriages at the Kinki Sharyo Factory. All newly-purchased carriages and refitted carriages will be equipped with LCD screens on top of each door and above the inter-car gangway position to broadcast dynamic route maps and upcoming station/destination information respectively. In addition, MTR awarded another contract in February 2016 to replace the original in-train TV 15-inch 4:3 display with 19-inch 16:9 or 19-inch 4:3 screens. <ref>MTR Corporation Limited, <Prequalification Invitation - LCD for EAL, WRL & MOL In-Train TV System>. The new carriages would arrive in Hong Kong in batches starting from September 3 2015. In terms of reconfiguration works, the first East Rail Line set (D201/D203) and Ma On Shan Line set (D519/D520) underwent reorganisation and refitting carried out in the middle of the night of July 3 and November 4 respectively in the same year. Both trains were transferred to Pat Heung Depot in the middle of the night with Eurorunner diesel locomotives. The first refitted train (D357/D358) would conduct a test run without passengers on the West Rail Line during the daytime starting from November 28, and on January 2, 2016 entered service. Unfortunately, the train was in service for less than 5 hours on the first day. Due to SelTrac trip computer failure, the train was taken out of service and returned to the depot for maintenance. It was accused of "unfavorable start". [22]

Chronology of Events[]
- On February 27, 2001, the delivery ceremony of the first Template:East Railway train (D201/D203) was held at the Kinki Vehicle factory in Osaka, represented by Kinki Vehicle, [[ Li Yintai, Director of Template:East Rail and Tang Shiqian, Director of West Rail of KCRC]] officiated.
- In March 22 2001, the first Template:East Rail train (D201/D203) arrived in Hong Kong, and a press conference was held on March 26 to announce the news.
- At the end of April 2001, this car began to conduct dynamic tests on East Rail.
- On September 4, 2001, the Kowloon-Canton Railway Company held a new car inauguration ceremony and a charity trip at Hung Hom Station; the next day (September 5, 2001), the first row { {East Rail}} train (D201/D203) put into service. [25]
- From April 21 to April 23 in 2002, the first West Rail train (D301/D302) arrived in Hong Kong and was gradually transported from Tuen Mun River Terminal to Pat Heung Depot. [26]
- September 26 2003: The first three trains of Tuen Ma Line (D501/D502, D503/D504 and D505/D506) arrived in Hong Kong and were gradually sent from Hung Hom Freight Yard to Ho Tung Lau Depot, where they were inspected and tested, and then sent to Hung Hom Freight Yard and Lo Wu Marshalling Yard for temporary storage.
- On November 9, 2003, the first three Ma On Shan Rail trains (D501/D502, D503/D504 and D505/D506) started dynamic testing on Template:East Rail.
- July 21, 2005, at about 5 o'clock in the morning, a train driver with three years of experience was driving a SP1900 train (D317/D318). Due to a signal error, the train failed to stop in time and collided head-on with another SP1900 train (D323/D324) at a speed of 13 kilometers per hour, and the fronts of the two trains (D318, D323) were slightly damaged. Since the incident occurred in the depot, the public was not informed. It was not until a few days later that the staff of the Kowloon-Canton Railway leaked the news to the media that the public learned of the incident. Then D317/D318 was reconfigured into 4 cars (C318, M318, P318, D318) and D323/D324 was separated into 3 cars (D323, P323, M323) for repair. During this time, the undamaged cars ran as D317-P317-M317+C324-M324-P324-D324, as a 7-car West Rail Line set until the restoration of D323-P323-M323+C318-M318-P318-D318 was completed in December of the same year, and the original formation was restored between the two sets.
- February 14, 2007, 9:00am: A SP1900 traveling the West Rail Line down (to Nam Cheong) (D305/D306) when passing through Tai Lam Tunnel (about 1.5 km away from Tsuen Wan West Station), the voltage transformer (transformer) on the roof of the vehicle overheated, causing the insulating oil to vaporize and explode, causing the fire alarm to activate. The accident closed the Tai Lam Tunnel for about 3 hours. [27][28][29]
- On January 2 in 2016, the first refitted East Rail Line SP1900 8-car train (D357/D358, formerly known as the Arts Unlimited Train) was put into service again with run number 013 and became the first 8-car train on the West Rail Line.)
- On February 5 2021, the SP1900 ran on the East Rail Line for the last time, as run 005. Before returning to the depot in the early morning of the next day, this train (D225/D227) is also the last train of the same model to carry passengers on East Rail Line. When the train arrived at Sheung Shui Station, the train driver made a manual announcement to replace the standard automated one played at the last stop. After reminding passengers to get off, the same driver made a special announcement: "Thank you for taking the final SP1900 train of the East Rail Line, we will see you on the Tuen Ma Line." Afterwards, the train returned to the Ho Tung Lau Depot with run number 886 (that is, "goodbye" in Chinese), officially withdrawing the SP1900 from operation on the East Rail Line. [30] This set was later towed to Pat Heung for conversion.
- Late 2021: First-class carriages F207, F227, F231, F215, and F219 were shipped to Kinki Sharyo in Japan to be refitted as ordinary carriages.
- In April 20 2022, the three-car first-class carriages F207, F227 and F231 were refitted into ordinary-class carriages at the Kinki Sharyo Manufacturing Plant in Japan and shipped to Hong Kong. [31]The original cars F207, F227, and F231 will be changed to H381, H395, and H375 respectively.
- On June 18 2022, the last two first-class carriages, F215 and F219, had their conversion into standard class carriages at the Kinki Sharyo plant completed in Japan and shipped to Hong Kong [32], and arrived at Pat Heung Depot in the early morning of July 6 of the same year. The original cars F215 and F219 will be changed to H391 and H387 respectively.
