The defunct KCR-icon KCR Light Rail Route 506 ran between Tuen Mun Ferry Pier and Yau Oi and is the First Light Rail route in Tuen Mun District. It was replaced by MTR Bus Route 506 in July 2002 and was in service for 5,042 days.

During the operation of this route, this route is represented by green colour, which is the same as the representative colour of the current Route 507 and Kwun Tong Line.

History[]

  • 23 September 1988: Route 506 was put into service between Tuen Mun Ferry Pier and On Ting, replacing KCR Bus Route 59B.
  • September 1990: In order to cooperate with the construction of Tuen Mun Ferry Pier to Yau Oi branch route, this route was temporarily changed to the loop at Yau Oi Stop.
  • 2 February 1992: Changed to Yau Oi as the terminus.
  • 14 July 2002: In conjunction with the Pui To Road overhead track project, this route was suspended and temporarily changed toLight Railfeeder buses.
  • 31 August 2003: The overhead track project of Pui To Road was completed, but there were not enough Light Rail trains at that time, so service did not resume.

It was planned to display the route number to 506D for the return train with San Shek Wan as the terminal stop on this route, but it was not implemented in the end.[1]

The new Light Rail vehicles have been put into service since 2009. Most Tuen Mun District councillors hope that this route can be resumed by Light Rail as soon as possible, but it has not been implemented for a long time. Until 2021, when a new Light Rail vehicle was put into service, the district councillors in the district once again expressed their appeal to resume the service as Light Rail, but it was also rejected.

Although this route has been cancelled in name, but for the convenience of setting up a turnout for trains to travel from Kin On Stop to Tsing Wun Stop, the Light Rail system still has the route data of Route 506.

Ridership[]

In the early days, this route was the only Light Rail route from On Ting, Town Centre to Tuen Mun Ferry Pier. Later, the Tuen Mun Branch Line Yau Oi to Tuen Mun Ferry Pier section was opened to traffic on 17 November 1991 and since passengers could use Route 507 as an alternative. This route became circular afterwards and at that time San Shek Wan has not yet been developed, and the service area is small. In the later period, Hong Kong’s industry moved northward to the Mainland China, and the number of people using Kin On Stop continued to decline. Therefore, the passenger volume was only average to low, and the number of vehicles was the least at that time with, only 4 to 6 trains and 1-car operation.
