The Admiralty Station (Chinese: 金鐘站) is a large-scale MTR interchange station located in the central business district. It was built on the ground floor of Admiralty Centre, 18 Harcourt Road, Admiralty, Central and Western District, Hong Kong Island. It was opened on February 12, 1980.

Admiralty Station is the halfway station of the Tsuen Wan Line and the Island Line, as well as the downward terminus of the South Island Line and East Rail Line; Admiralty Station is also the first four-line interchange station in Hong Kong, and during the MTR's renovation works at Admiralty Station, it was called the "Hub Station" project.

After the expansion works of the South Island Line and the Shatin-Central Line, this station is the third deepest (43m deep), the lowest altitude (-39m) and the station with the most platforms in the MTR network.

Symbol of Stations[]

The old part of Admiralty Station was mainly painted in blue, with yellow enamel panels on both sides of the lobby and the descending platform of the Tsuen Wan Line, while the extension of the South Island Line and East Rail Line is mainly white. Since 2016, the central pillars of the lobby and the platform, which were originally covered with blue papier-mâché, have been replaced with white marble, and the outermost pillars and walls of the platform have been replaced with blue glass panels, in line with the opening of the South Island Line section and the expanded section of the station at the end of the year.

Like other stations on the same line, the enamel panels on the platform walls of the Island Line are printed with the station name in large calligraphy written by Au Kit-tong, a retired architect of the MTR Corporation. Au Kit-tong said that he wrote the word "金鐘" loosely, with the intention of symbolizing the reverberation of the bell. Before and after the opening of the South Island Line, the newly added blue glass panels on the platform walls of the Island Line and Tsuen Wan Line are also printed with large calligraphy characters of the station name, so that the calligraphy characters are also extended to the platforms of the Tsuen Wan Line and other than the original enamel panels. The location makes the calligraphy characters on the platform appear for the first time on the Tsuen Wan Line.

Station Structure[]

From the opening of the station to the opening of the South Island Line, Admiralty Station will have a concourse on one level and a platform on two levels. During the construction of the South Island Line, four additional platforms were built underground adjacent to the current site of Admiralty Station, two of which were used by the South Island Line and the other two were used by the East Rail Line extended under the Sha Tin to Central Link project to Admiralty.

After the opening of the east extension, two transfer levels and a platform will be added under the L3 platform; an entrance and exit gate will be set up on the east of the main lobby and under Exit E, which is connected to the main lobby by a non-paid zone passage. The L5 transfer channel and the L6 platform are built in large caverns excavated in the rock formation below the Pacific Place. The construction method is similar to that of Tai Koo Station. Passengers can clearly observe its vault design from the transfer channel.

At present, Admiralty Station has only one off-station lift connecting the station lobby to the ground and Harcourt Garden Podium; MTR explained that due to geographical constraints, only one off-station lift can be installed at Admiralty Station.

Platforms[]

Admiralty Station currently has a total of eight platforms, which are arranged in three sets of island platforms and one set of separate island platforms. There are two old platforms on the L2 and L3 floors, one for each of the Tsuen Wan Line and one for the Island Line. The two platforms on the L5 floor are used by the East Rail Line, and the two platforms on the bottom floor of L6 are used by the South Island Line. All platforms have platform screen doors.

L2 and L3 platforms are available for passengers to transfer across platforms. Passengers travelling to and from the Island Line (Wan Chai to Chai Wan) and Tsuen Wan Line (Kowloon and New Territories stations) only need to walk across the opposite platform to transfer to another line train. The two tracks are not parallel, the Tsuen Wan Line track is located under Harcourt Road and Admiralty Centre (north), and the Island Line track is located under Drake Street (south). The four platforms are all curved outward (the central part of the car has the widest gap), which makes the width of the platforms vary in different positions, which is rare among the island platforms of various stations along the MTR. Due to the curvature of the platform, there is a wide gap between the platform and the train. When the train arrives at the station, a broadcast of "Please mind the gap" will be broadcasted. The edge of the platform floor is even posted with a large "Please mind the gap" that was unique to this station. Later, the curved platforms of other stations also put similar stickers on the ground. In recent years, they have been put on the platform screen doors or platform gates to strengthen the reminder to passengers.

The station concourse, transfer level and platform levels are connected by stairs, elevators and lifts. There are four elevators in the lobby connecting to the L2 platform and two elevators connecting the L3 platform, and one elevator connecting the L2 and L3 floors. The main lobby, L2 and L3 floors are connected by a lift. There is a pair of wide gates on the west side of the lobby, which are exclusively used by lift passengers and cannot be accessed from the lobby level to the central gate area.

The extension to the east of the station is located at the basement of the Pacific Place and Harcourt Garden, and the facilities are concentrated on the L5 and L6 floors. Among them, the L5 floor is also used as the southern terminal and transfer channel of the East Rail Line. Due to the huge transfer demand at Admiralty Station, there is a transfer channel at L5 for going to and from the Tsuen Wan Line/ Island Line and the East Rail Line/South Island Line. It is used by people on the line, and at the same time, the East Rail Line platform is designed with a separate island platform. When entering this station, the train will enter Platform 8 to clear passengers. After clearing passengers, it will enter the offside tunnel to make a turn-back, and then enter Platform 7 to pick up passengers to the New Territories and the Border Closed Areas. Before the Cross-Harbour section of the Template:Shatin-Central Link is opened, it will only be open to the public at the transfer position between the platforms on both sides. There are two lifts connected to the L6 floor in the transfer passage, and a public toilet is located at the southern end of the floor.

The L6 floor is the end of the track on the South Island Line. The platform is also designed as an island platform. The two platforms are located on the same platform island. When the train to Admiralty enters the platform and opens the door, it will change to the opposite direction. Since the trains on the South Island Line are not frequent, only one platform is used most of the time. Trains usually use platform 5 before 8pm, while platform 6 is usually only used after 8pm.

There is a pair of lifts connecting from the lobby gate area of the east extension to the L5 floors, and does not stop at the L4 floors. Built outside the lift gate of the extension, the MTR uses a full-width red wall and extra-large fonts to remind passengers to give priority to those in need. In recent years, with the popularity of the "criticism" culture for priority seats, it has been ridiculed by some netizens and the media as "caring lift". Even so, MTR has gradually added large red "Priority Use" stickers to lifts at other stations.

Admiralty Sidings[]

Tsuen Wan Line and Island Line[]

Admiralty Siding is a siding facility shared by the Island Line and the Tsuen Wan Line. It is located on the L4 floor of Central Station below Chater Road (that is, below the Tsuen Wan Line platform, and there is a staff passageway from Platform 4 level (L4)). Three parallel tracks are used for parking three trains, and spare trains will also be parked to facilitate the dispatch of empty trains to evacuate passengers when large-scale events and other factors cause a surge in station traffic.

After the train closes every night, the train control center will arrange for the Tsuen Wan Line train to park on the side line of Admiralty Station, waiting for the service to be provided the next morning. When the train arrives at the Admiralty side line and stops, the commander drives the train manually according to the established procedure, and drives the train to the designated parking position ahead at a slow speed.

The Admiralty Siding is also used for trains to and from the Tsuen Wan Line and the Island Line. After the train leaves any of these platforms, it can make a turn-back there and go to the corresponding platform via the sidings. In the early days of the Island Line's opening, the trains were unable to serve the two stations of Sheung Wan and Central (the Island Line platform) and then directly went to platform 3 to pick up passengers and return to the Eastern District. During the 54-hour closure of Sheung Wan Station in August 2011, the Island Line was again changed to Admiralty as the terminal station, and the above-mentioned turn-back arrangement was adopted once again.

East Rail Line[]

There is also an offside tunnel extending about 900 meters to the south of the East Rail Line platform of Admiralty Station to the bottom of Bowen Road in the Mid-Levels for train turnbacks. After the train arrives at platform 8 of Admiralty Station to clear-up passengers, it will enter the side line for turning back, and then enter platform 7 to pick up passengers and head to the New Territories.

Concourse[]

The lobby of Admiralty Station is located on the L1 floor, with the entrance gate area in the center, surrounded by MTR Shops and exit passageways on all sides; the entrance and exit gates are located on the north and south sides of the gate area, allowing passengers to enter and exit the station, which is a rare design among the MTR stations. There are several sets of escalators and stairs in the station lobby. Most of the escalators are directly connected to the platform and the lobby. There is only one escalator between the two platforms. It is a typical transfer station in the early system of revision. The lifts to and from all three floors were opened on March 8, 2008. They are located in the west of the lobby and have a dedicated gate, separate from the central gates.

There is a customer service centre at the station, located next to the gate on the north side of the lobby, providing services such as customer service and ticketing. The Lost and Found and Student Ride Discount Program Office and Passenger Services (formerly known as "MTR Travel") are located in the lobby connecting Exit B. A dazzling array of MTR boutiques, MTR commemorative tickets, theme park tickets, etc. are all available for public sale at "Passenger Services", and MTR services and Hong Kong and Macau sightseeing information will also be provided to passengers. The Lost and Found and Student Ride Concession Scheme Office accepts inquiries about Personalized Octopus Cards with "Student Status" or "Persons with Disabilities", collection of new Personalized Octopus Cards of "Student Status" or "ersons with Disabilities", and accepts passengers' requests for personalised Octopus cards. Inquiries about lost items in the MTR area and assist the owner to go through the claim procedures are also available there.

There is also a digital service station in the lobby for MTR Mobile users to print gift redemption coupons; iCentre Internet Center is located in the center of the gate area, providing free Internet access; mailboxes are set up in the unpaid area for passengers to send letters. There is a guest toilet in the gate area of the extension to the east of the lobby.

Exits[]

Admiralty Station has 7 entrances and exits, connecting nearby shopping malls, office buildings and public transport interchanges.

From July 10, 2011, exits E1 and E2 will be closed to facilitate the expansion of the station for the construction of the Template:South Island Line (East). MTR recommends passengers to use Exit D to go to destinations near Exit E. Exits E1 and E2 have been demolished and backfilled to be used for the station expansion site. The newly built Exit E at the original site has partially opened when the South Island Line opened, and would continue to be used as the construction site of the Template:Shatin-Central Link; it will be resumed to full operation after the commencement of East Rail Line Cross-Harbour Section.
